What is Bunkuany?
Bunkuany is an ancient Tayrona archaeological settlement hidden in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Its stone terraces and archaeological remains reflect the history of the Indigenous civilizations that inhabited this territory long before the arrival of Europeans.
Is Bunkuany the same as the Lost City?
No. Bunkuany and Teyuna (Lost City) are two different archaeological sites located in different areas of the Sierra Nevada. Bunkuany offers a much less crowded experience and can be visited on a shorter trek.
How difficult is the 2-Day Bunkuany Trek?
We consider it a moderate trek. You don't need to be an experienced hiker, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours in a tropical mountain environment, including uphill and downhill sections.
How much do we hike each day?
On Day 1, expect approximately 13 km and around 5 hours of hiking, depending on the group's pace and stops along the way.
Day 2 is the longer day. We hike to Bunkuany, explore the archaeological site and then continue down toward Calabazo. Expect approximately 6–7 hours of activity throughout the day.
Where do we sleep?
The first night is spent at La Playita, a local self-sustainable mountain farm. Accommodation is simple and rural, allowing you to experience life in the Sierra Nevada away from the main tourist areas. Beds and bedding are provided, so you don't need to bring a sleeping bag.
Can we swim during the trek?
Yes! One of the highlights of the first day is the La Lisa River, where there is time to swim and cool down. We recommend bringing a swimsuit.
Does the 2-day trek visit a Kogui village?
No. The 2-Day Bunkuany Trek focuses on the archaeological site, nature and campesino communities along the route. If you would like to spend a night in a Kogui community and have a cultural experience with them, we recommend the 3-Day Bunkuany Trek.
Is this trek inside Tayrona National Park?
No. The trek takes place in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, outside Tayrona National Park. The route travels through rural mountain areas, rivers, farms and the archaeological site of Bunkuany.
Where does the trek start and finish?
We organize transportation to the starting area of the trek. The route finishes in Calabazo, on the main road connecting Santa Marta with Tayrona and Palomino.
This makes Bunkuany particularly convenient if you're continuing your trip toward Tayrona or Palomino after the trek.
Is transportation from Santa Marta included?
Yes. Pickup from the urban area of Santa Marta and transportation required for the standard trek itinerary are included. If you're staying outside our regular pickup area, contact us beforehand and we'll help you determine the most convenient meeting point.
Can I leave my large backpack or suitcase with you?
Yes. You can safely leave your larger luggage at our Domek Tours office in Bonda and take only a small backpack with what you need for the trek.
What is included?

What should I bring?
We recommend hiking shoes or good trail shoes, lightweight long trousers, a swimsuit, insect repellent, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, a light rain jacket, personal toiletries and a small backpack.
Are long trousers necessary?
They are not mandatory, but we strongly recommend them. Parts of the route pass through tropical vegetation, and long trousers provide better protection from insects, plants and the sun. Bring plenty of insect repellent as well.
Are there many tourists on the Bunkuany route?
Usually, no. Bunkuany receives far fewer visitors than the traditional Lost City route. We also operate with small groups, which helps preserve the quiet and personal character of the experience.
